This winter season has truly been a roller coaster. In some places of Florida, we have people tanning and enjoying the sun, while in others we have snow and ice. In Orlando, we have had a very chilly winter season compared to past ones, which caused Olympia students to convey a whole myriad of different opinions on it.
Senior Samir Nofal expressed, “I despised this winter because I had gotten sick a bunch and could not go out in the sun because it was constantly freezing.” This winter specifically had freezing temperatures, dropping the thermometer scales as low as twenty degrees. Students started layering their clothes, and the school even had to ensure they had the right resources to keep students warm while they were learning. “The night I had heard school might be canceled due to the weather I was really curious to see if it would snow in Orlando,” Nofal claimed. With the news of snow in North Florida, students were very curious to see if it would snow here in central Florida this year.
There have been a few crazy events regarding the cold weather this season. Senior Marley Franklin revealed, “The sprinklers in my neighborhood were left on overnight and they froze the plants and grass by how cold it was”. People were going crazy after seeing this major event in Orlando, and some even thought it was a fun and unique change, while others just wanted the Florida sun back. “I miss being able to go to the beach every weekend with all my friends rather than being bundled up and not wanting to go outside,” Franklin communicated.
Although the Florida sun is what our state is primarily known for, some people still enjoyed the cold weather. “Every winter break my family and I go on a trip specifically to see the snow. I love the cold weather and the activities that come with it,” senior Megan Bassil shared . Since we don’t have the cold winter seasons in Florida, we often miss out on such fun experiences like seeing snow, snowboarding, skiing, sledding, and more. This year, although Orlando did not have snow, some students enjoyed the cooler weather by going ice skating, having bonfires, and enjoying being outside with cold fresh air.
Overall, our Titans had a pretty chilly winter season. There were a few firsts regarding this winter, and there may be more to come. This winter season also caused mixed emotions and opinions. It has definitely impacted our Titans day to day life, as well as has created some new challenges to face.
