National Honor Society is a well known student-run organization, focused on appreciating knowledgeable and dedicated students all across the country. At Olympia, our National Honor Society works to help students become service-oriented and academically driven. In this article, a team of Olympia’s very own NHS leaders will showcase all of the opportunities and benefits NHS membership can offer and present the incredible impact they make on our community.
“NHS is not just about grades it’s about how you choose to contribute; you’re expected to show up, be reliable, and be willing to help,” senior and NHS Historian Grace Lee claimed. Here, students are given the chance to become involved within our school and learn responsibility and importance of helping others.
The National Honor Society doesn’t only teach our students responsibility, it also impacts their personal character and academic drive. All NHS members are responsible for upholding the four pillars of NHS: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Emily Armao, senior and Vice President of Outreach stated, “Members can uphold these pillars by completing service hours, taking rigorous classes, and stepping up as good examples for other students at school.” As stated previously,, the National Honor Society offers so many ways for students to become involved in their school and the greater community.
During their time in the National Honor Society, students have created forever friendships and memories. “I would say our Trunk or Treat service was the most meaningful and fun. We were able to have a huge impact by providing an engaging event for a ton of kids. I was able to create so many amazing memories with my peers,” Brandon Liu, senior and another Vice President of Outreach expressed. National Honor Society allows students to stand by each other and watch their peers become kind-hearted and devoted leaders. Their efforts make the learning environment fun, while also showing what acts of service can do for others as well as yourself.
Lastly, our very own National Honor Society President, senior Emma Hudson, provided advice to future NHS members. “For anyone thinking about joining the NHS, it is an amazing club that can prove beneficial to any student who wants to join. I think it teaches a great deal of compassion and exposes students to parts of the community that we may not see often.”
Overall, the National Honor Society presents many opportunities for students to get involved within our community and school. They reward the proactive conduct of these students with treats, volunteer hours, and most importantly, the recognition and merit of being an NHS member. If you are considering joining, don’t forget to follow their social media— @nhs_ohs on Instagram— and keep up with one of the most prestigious high school clubs in Olympia and nationwide!
