Olympia basketball opened its season with an extraordinary night of two big wins in front of a huge crowd, full of both home and rival fans, against Dr. Phillips High School. The freshmen had a rocky start, losing by 16 points, however the junior varsity team made up for the rough part of the night, winning 66–52. The last game of the night was the varsity team’s time to shine, which continued the winning streak with a 68–50 finish.
When the game was about to start, Head Coach Justin Shipp stated that the team had been preparing for this moment from the first day of training camp. “The players are very focused and thrilled to be playing a rival from the same town,” he remarked. “It’s been three years since the last game between these teams, so everyone is really excited,” the coach continued. Just from his demeanor, you can tell that Olympia did not come to play.
According to Coach Shipp, this year, there are improvements in the team, which gives a big advantage from last season to this one. “Everyone is more skilled and hungrier than the previous year,” he stated. He has seen the players taking a high role, being more vocal, and actually taking over the court. Having the team demonstrate these skills throughout this season shows exactly why our team is ranked third in the Florida Division 7A.
So what was the reason for this win? “Our defensive detail will be the reason that we will win,” Shipp replied without hesitation. The coach was right— varsity restricted their adversaries to just 50 points and gained control over the game’s rhythm. This masterful maneuver proved the team’s professionalism. They didn’t let their emotions get in the way of their main focus— that long awaited win.

Despite the vengeful spirit, feeling of excitement, and the full crowd, the players remained focused. Coach Shipp said, “They are meant for this.” He added, “They really want this match, and it is obvious.”
The energy was high from the first whistle to the last. The two teams along with their fans filled the room with cheerful noise and excited gasps, but the Titans kept their eyes on the prize. They played with faith, demonstrating to everyone the reason for their efforts in getting this opportunity. No doubt, even with the loss early on, with the other two big wins, the entire team and school ended the night with momentum. Coach Shipp put it simply —- “It’s a bunch of guys who are committed and dedicated to the team.” After the rivalry game on Tuesday Olympia basketball team moves into the season with high energy, pumping confidence, and many great things to come.
