When people think of the baseball team they picture athletes, coaches, and even hot dogs, but for the Olympia Titans Baseball program, it’s more than that. They play for the school, community, and fellow teammates. The Titans baseball team is about more than the team itself–they prioritize building leadership and making a difference where they can, whether by volunteering at local events for the community or simply just being respectful and listening in class.
Senior catcher Colin Harden, who has been with the program for his whole high school career, gave an idea of what it’s like on the team and what it has to offer. Harden said that “one of the main things we focus on here is creating the pathway for the next generation of guys coming here to play ball. It’s more than just winning games, it’s about setting an example and doing things the right way even when it’s not convenient.”
A big event for the team is its annual golf tournament. This is a fundraiser that helps grow the program, brings together families and alumni, and supports businesses. Players spend time helping organize the event, greeting players, and inviting people to play in the tournament on their teams. In the end, they pass out awards. All in all, it’s a great way to get the community involved with the program.
Junior pitcher Kingston Ebanks, who has also been with the program his whole high school career, said he “loves seeing the young kids excited to play. When they look up to players like us, it makes me realize how important it is to be a role model and set an example for the next generation”.
The baseball team always shows support for other school teams. Whether it be football, volleyball, or basketball, they are there to encourage and cheer on fellow Titans, taking pride in representing their school.
The team made it clear that it values being a family, helping each other, and genuinely caring about the students, school, and community that supports them.
Now that the spring season is coming up, players like Harden and Ebanks are confident that the next generation will carry the same attitude they have. Harden affirmed that “we have built something special here, and I just know these guys are gonna keep it going.”
The Titans continue to set the standard of what it means to be a student athlete. They have built a family, winning not just on the field, but in the way they carry themselves through everyday life on and off the field.
