With the winter sports season finally here, Olympia’s varsity basketball team kicks it off with a win against Dr.Phillips with the score of 68 – 50. Olympia’s JV team did not disappoint, winning against Dr.Phillips’s JV team with the final score of 66 – 52. This double win marked a spot in our records as this was the first game of the season.
Our JV team held up well throughout the game, compared to the varsity team slowly falling behind while playing, with Dr.Phillips gaining on them with high-point-scoring plays and tricks. Despite all, Olympia was able to come back after some time with accurate and hard fought plays that they were able to make by working together as a team.
As the ball went back and forth in the game, so did the crowd. The gym was filled with families and friends of the competing schools, so the cheers of excitement were heard all throughout the match. With every point being scored, the crowd was able to cheer on their team even though they were all together and not on opposite sides of the court.
Although the final score was a team effort, there were some clear MVPs in the game. Number 0 James Nowell who scored 19 points, was followed by number10 CJ Nunnally who scored 17 points throughout the game. These players showed what it takes to succeed and what it’s like to be a student athlete bearing the responsibility of playing against our rival. They show dedication and focus throughout the game while still having fun and showing good sportsmanship to the crowd and the opposing team.
Despite the heated match up, the players never miss a chance to show off how they have grown over the seasons of playing for Olympia. While some have played over their entire high school careers, others have only started new this season. It shows how everyone can work and learn together to be able to achieve their goals for our school and their future as a student and athlete.
Even though they didn’t always score like they wanted to during the game, they still worked together to get back in the right mindset and grow from there. While everyone’s contribution wasn’t the most noticeable, it shows just how much they deserve their spots on the Varsity team. This season was special in terms of showcasing every player’s accomplishments.
While the two teams played well against each other, they were also able to keep the crowd entertained. It was definitely a great kick off game, and it holds high expectations for the rest of the season.
