What is Senior Flip Day?
Have you ever sat in class while a teacher is lecturing and thought about what it is like to teach a class, even just for a day? This year, Senior Flip Day took place on November 20th, right before Thanksgiving break. Senior Flip Day is the one day of the year that seniors can take the place of their favorite teacher or staff member. The school day was turned into an organized chaos, with kids being in charge, and teachers having to learn from their very own students! Some students even went the extra mile and dressed up as the staff member they swapped with! The students made their own lesson plans, and discussed with their teachers what they wanted to teach on Flip Day. Imagine being a student watching your very own classmate teaching the class!
How Do You Sign Up?
In order to sign up, you first had to get permission from the teacher or staff member that you want to flip with. When they agreed, you then needed to fill out the Flip Registration Form. You were not allowed to flip if the form is turned in late or not turned in at all. You must have also gotten a permission slip, and have it signed by your parent or guardian, as well as all of your current teachers. Once all of that was done, you were ready to flip!
Olympia’s Thoughts
“It was really fun. I was nervous at first to teach, but it turned into a good experience and I could just be myself”, Sienna Froneberger exclaimed. She was a senior that swapped and taught on Flip Day. Froneberger taught the class in her own unique style. She was able to overcome her nerves and have a pleasant time teaching the class, while learning new things along the way.
Seniors were not the only ones really excited for Flip Day this year, the teachers and staff were pumped with joy and anticipation as well.
“I decided to take part in the Senior Flip Day because I have known the students that are taking over my classes since they were in ninth grade,” says Niamh Davies, a math teacher who participated in Senior Flip Day. Ms. Davies never had a student take over her class before Flip Day, and she thought that it would be a fun experience. Teachers were able to swap with their favorite students and see how much they’ve developed over the years. “I’m really looking forward to seeing how their confidence has grown over the past few years,” Ms. Davies continued.
All seniors participating in Flip Day showed their willingness to face the potential challenges that come with teaching a class or monitoring the school, and it also made for a fun learning experience. She acknowledges that teaching can be really daunting, let alone students teaching other students, so she admired that the seniors were willing to take on the challenge of teaching a class for a whole day. Ms. Davies explained that she is excited to see how her students will choose to teach a certain subject and explain it to their fellow classmates. “Everyone teaches, learns, and processes information differently,” she says. Because of this, the students may be able to explain something in a totally different way than how she normally would. “Overall, I’m just happy to spend a school day with some of my favorite past students,” she exclaimed.
The day went by smoothly, with seniors walking around the school and making sure their fellow students followed the rules, and seniors teaching their classes the lesson for the day. It was a day full of laughs, surprises, and learning. Senior Flip Day 2025 will be one to remember!
