The Emmy Award Show featuredmultiple TV shows that were nominated for this award, including already publicly adored names like Severance, Paradise, and The Pitt. The latter had thirteen Emmy nominations and three awards for its first season. The three awards that this show received were Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. The former was awarded to Noah Wyle, who is also the executive producer of the show and has made previous appearances in other medical and social justice dramas like ER and Leverage: Redemption. The latter went to Katherine LaNasa, who also made a guest appearance on ER and is best known for her role as Sally in a dark comedy— Imposters.
Deep in The Pitt
The Emmy-nominated show premiered its first episode on January 9th, 2025 on HBO Max. The show follows an overcrowded and financially burdened hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The show introduces us to its main character, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, portrayed by Wyle. As the Senior Emergency Attending Physician, he is not only responsible for monitoring the patients, but also, mentoring the medical students and residents. Dr. Robby’s character represents the current emotional state of many medical professionals and how they were affected by the recent Covid-19 pandemic. The show gives us flashbacks to his time during the lockdown. Dr. Robby is confronted with both the external conflict of being a doctor, specifically one that looks after the integrity of the ER, and the internal conflict that comes from ignoring his grief and refusing to acknowledge his mentor’s passing within the show.
What makes The Pitt so special?

While a lot of medical shows are focused on the dramatized version of what life as a health professional is, The Pitt has received most of its praise for showing the most realistic tale of what it means to be a doctor. The show uses special effects, makeup, and props in order to accurately model various medical procedures. Not only do these scenes add to the overall realism of the show, but they also switch the perspective on the healthcare system as a whole. Another feature that makes The Pitt special is that the show’s plotline connects to real issues that are affecting the American healthcare system right now. The show is set in an overcrowded emergency room, which reflects the current nationwide staff shortage in hospitals. While the healthcare workers in the show voice their concerns over the imbalance in the amount of time that they work and their pay, the hospital administration ignores their concerns and focuses on the physical look of the hospital instead, funneling the budget into improving the patient satisfaction scores instead of staff salaries. The show goes into extreme detail and portrays the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to being a health care professional.
Controversy surrounding The Pitt and ER

Prior to directing The Pitt, Noah Wyle was a part of a similar medical drama called ER from 1994 to 2004. Recently, however, the main producers of The Pitt were served with a lawsuit from Sherri Crichton, the widow of the creator of ER. The reasons for the suit were the similarities in both the shows’ plotlines and the fact that The Pitt uses the same actor from ER, as if The Pitt was an approved continuation of that character’s storyline, which it wasn’t. While not that much is known about the current progress of this lawsuit, it could be inferred that this lawsuit would affect the plotline of the second season of the show. Currently, it’s been revealed to the public that the second season is going to rely on the main plotline of how budget cuts affect the quality of care that health professionals give to their patients.
While the show is facing some controversy from the lawsuit, the development of the show is ongoing. This is mostly due to its high ratings, as a lot of reviewers praise the show’s creativity and boldness in showing both the positives and negatives that come with being a medical professional. Currently, it has been confirmed that season two of the show would be released in January 2026 on HBO Max.
