The popular app TikTok faces a nationwide ban on January 19th, 2025, leaving many users & content creators disappointed. A law signed by Joe Biden in April requires TikTok to divest from its Chinese ownership and sell to a U.S company, or it will be shut down.
Millions of people use TikTok daily, with some relying on it as their main source of income by selling their own products off of the platform. If TikTok is banned, they will no longer have access to that source of income.
For others,TikTok is simply a source of entertainment and social interaction bringing joy and happiness into their lives. Losing TikTok might affect that peace that TikTok brings them. Content creators will also need to seek new platforms to share their work and engage with their audiences. Here is what our fellow Titans have to say about the ban.
“I feel upset that it’s getting banned because the businesses won’t be able to sell their products and that’s most of their income. So, now they would have to find another way to sell their products. I didn’t really use TikTok but a lot of people used it to advertise for their business, but now that it’s gonna be gone [so] they can’t. So that [stinks],” junior Abdelkarim Saleh expressed.
“I feel like it should not get banned because I enjoy using TikTok all day everyday & now they’re taking away one of my sources of happiness,” sophomore Keyshaun Marcellus stated.
“TikTok won’t be missed because there are other social media people can use like Instagram, YouTube & more,” Coach Berkley Carey stated.
“I’m sad TikTok is getting banned because it’s affecting people making money and affecting people being able to express themselves. I’m gonna miss TikTok because I use TikTok a lot when I’m bored,” junior Tyler Brown expressed.
“I’m upset about TikTok getting banned because I enjoy watching TikTok and it’s not only affecting me but everyone on TikTok. Like influencers or upcoming influencers [for example], it’s a source of making money for them. Also, TikTok is an app where people can be themselves and build a character,” junior Ryanna Millis explained.
“I’m very upset that TikTok is getting banned. I found a lot of peace with that app. I used it to escape reality, express my feelings and thoughts, have fun & socialize with friends & family so them banning TikTok [stinks]. I won’t be able to do any of that anymore. TikTok will definitely be missed,” freshman Lai’yaunie Hendricks expressed.
The ban on TikTok is set to impact various aspects of society. Content creators will need to quickly find new platforms to share their work, while businesses will need to find alternative ways to sell and promote their products. For regular users, it could mean a significant change in their daily routines, entertainment, and sources of joy. As TikTok leaves the digital landscape, people may need to search for new ways to connect, relax, and express themselves.
