The Black History Month Showcase was a beautiful way to finish this February. It was a reflection of the diversity that Olympia holds and an amazing representation of African American culture. The Oracle interviewed Olympia Titans on their thoughts about the Black History Month Showcase.
Different culture, different experience

“I thought it was a really good experience,” freshman Sadie Morrison declared, “It was very educational and brought tears to my eyes.”
Learning about different cultures is certainly one of the most profound ways of learning about what is going on around the world. African culture is especially interesting as it was the stem for many other cultures around the world. This showcase is an enriching way for many students to learn more about different cultures. It can expand their knowledge and spark conversations about it with many other curious learners.
“It was a great effort by the school to get more history out there,” sophomore Alec Prohaska stated.
Schools are, perhaps, the most effective ways for many teenagers to learn about different cultures from a young age. Spreading information on Titan TV or on any social media can help the students gain some new knowledge. It also allows students to make new friends and socialize by having a common topic of interest.
Forms of culture and entertainment
“Their music is cool. I’m Guyanese so I kind of get a little bit of an African style of music,” sophomore Sonali Ramjas stated.
This is also a great opportunity for many students with similar cultural backgrounds to see their fellow students perform in the showcase and learn more about each other’s cultures. There is so much in common even though there is such variety in cultures.
“I think the Black History Month Showcase was interesting. I really enjoyed how they shared facts about it every single day on Titan TV,” sophomore Sophia Lin stated.

So many people are interested in seeing the wide variety of information about African culture presented to the student body by Titan TV, The Oracle, SGA, and so many other amazing organizations that we have on campus.
“The music was my most favorite part about the Black History Month Showcase,” sophomore Sadie Morrison said.

African music is very upbeat and smooth at the same time. There are a lot of African American songs that people listen to worldwide. Music is the major element in understanding culture. Often, music can be the leading source, a type of introduction into the culture that can grow into a deep interest.
“I liked seeing how they use different clothing styles better for their environment,” sophomore Sonali Ramjas said.
Clothing can also be an interesting aspect of culture to explore, as it often reflects on the unique climate, agriculture, and traditions of each nation. Many might simply be interested in the particular fashion characteristic to each culture. This can spark many conversations and form new interests among the student body.
The Black History Month Showcase was an amazing reflection of the rich African American culture with amazing music and a profound cultural experience as a whole. It is very interesting to see the diversity and a plethora of cultures represented on campus and observe how they synthesize and create a unique cultural experience for everyone!
