La La Land, a 2016 movie centered around the importance of following one’s dreams, was chosen as our prom theme this year. It follows the story of Mia and Sebastian, their respective stars aligning in Los Angeles as they hope to achieve their aspirations: becoming an actress for her and opening a jazz club for him.
As prom quickly approaches, many seniors and juniors unfamiliar with this, in my humble opinion, gut wrenching masterpiece ,may need some guidance when it comes to what to wear. In order to help you shine as bright as Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling throughout the night while taking inspiration from the theme, here are some suggestions on what to wear to truly be that someone special in the crowd!
The Color Palette

The styling team of La La Land is known for its cleverness. Each color, carefully chosen, is used at a specific time to express the significance of a scene. Blue represents creativity and is often used throughout the movie to hint at Hollywood and the stars who paved the way for our two protagonists.

Yellow indicates that change is ahead. Mostly used when the characters are at crossroads, it represents life-changing decisions that eventually lead to something greater.

Red is used as a manifestation of reality: whenever Mia needs a wake-up call or Sebastian realizes he must conform if he wishes to keep his piano gigs, red is around. However, it is also used when they are met with the promise of something they’ve wished for.

Purple, a mix between blue and red, is used for love, usually when the main characters manage to compromise.

Of course, what screams more piano or old Hollywood than black and white? Classy and timeless, there is no way to go wrong with what some may call “shades” rather than colors.
Other Limitless Options

Now, when it comes to fabrics and clothing, silk is seen a lot throughout the movie. When Mia and her roommates decide to party, a perfect inspiration for a group of four, they’re all wearing silky mini dresses with matching accessories.
Glittery dresses call back to the starry night during the famous dance scene, while jazz-style suits with Oxford shoes are staples of Sebastian’s wardrobe. While simple most of the time, the outfits remain vibrant, easily grabbing the viewer’s attention despite the often chaotic background.
We expect both the class of 2025 and the class of 2026 to shine as the brightest stars under the Floridian sky on April 5th. May the Pinterest lights guide you if any more help is needed. I strongly recommend watching the movie to get the full experience and the most authentic outfit inspiration and don’t forget to grab some tissues before the planetarium scene or the final montage. If you are still unsure whether you should attend or not, quoting Sebastian,“You should come”.
