On January 18th, Olympia high school held its Winter Pep Rally. There were multiple showcases of Olympia’s talented performers; the dancers, the cheerleaders, and even the iconic Titan mascots had their time in the limelight! Today, we’ve gotten some inside takes on the school spirit display.
Cheerleader Amira Martin explains that pep rallies are “always so fun and exciting,” for the team to perform in, and that “supporting sports teams and peers is always rewarding.” We were also curious to hear about how the cheerleaders prepare for the events; Martin went on to state that the team has to “polish [their] routines and dances,” before each rally, but the majority of preparation “really happens over the summer.”
Pep rallies benefit the student body; they are a good way to bring about school spirit. “I think pep rallies give students a break from school work and allow for bonding,” Martin explained, “cheering on our sports team and getting excited about their season is a great way to boost spirit.” In addition to the student body, pep rallies can also create a sense of school spirit for the performers themselves. “Pep rallies are a great way to get closer as a team,” Martin describes. Performing in front of the school can be “anxiety-inducing,” but that performing with the team allows it to be a fun bonding experience and provide us preparation for future competitions.
Overall, the Winter Pep Rally was a success. The student body had a lot of fun attending the event, and according to one of the performers, it was equally fun to be a part of.
