When students enter Olympia High School they may walk by a familiar place, the Media Center. Here students can check out books and stop by the Media Center during lunch. However, there are more opportunities the library provides that may not be clear to some students.
If you can’t make it to the library in the morning or afternoon, there are many different resources you can use through Launchpad in the “Library Research Tools” folder. There are apps such as SORA, Follet Destiny, and Orange County Virtual Library to check out books online under your student ID. Then you can access any requested book virtually on your laptop.
For the new round of “Clash of the Titans” students can contribute to the scores by logging minutes on the Library Resource Tool, Beanstack. The library has many books that students can check out to read to help their class earn points to move up the podium. When logging minutes “It doesn’t just have to be leisure reading, if you are reading for a class, log it,” Media Specialist, Ms. Joy Harrigan discussed. The points reset each week allowing for new grade levels to become the victor of the podium. So, good luck Titans!
With SAT and ACT scores coming out, students may realize more studying needs to be applied in certain subjects. Many students may be unaware, but the Media Center offers multiple books around the topics discussed on these exams like grammar, math, and reading. “Online test guides are always current!”, Ms. Joy exclaimed, which will allow for all students to stay up to date on the information on standardized exams.
If you are reminiscing about the past middle school reading, the Media Center includes sections of previously popular books like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, “Babysitters Club”, or “Bone”. There is now a throwback to middle school section included right when you walk into the library. “I cannot even keep them on the shelves, they are so popular,” Ms. Joy stated.
When you want to check out a good book for any occasion then this is the place for you. The library will be open “7 am to 3 pm [which is] subject to change depending on meetings that could be happening throughout the day. But students are welcomed to come for B lunch (as long as you have a pass) currently, since A lunch is full”, Ms. Joy stated.
Here at the Oracle we hope you will stop by the Media Center in the future to either check out a good book or explore the many study materials they have to offer. But for now, happy reading!
